The current emperor of Japan abstained on April 30th, today, and a new emperor will take over from tomorrow.
It is the first time for an emperor to retire for 200 years.
The changing of the emperor also changes the way Japan calls its era. In government offices, era names are used rather than the Christian year, such as 2019, etc.

What do Japanese think of the Emperor?

Under Japanese law, the Japanese Emperor only exists as a symbol and does not get involved in politics. Pre-Heisei era, the Emperor Showa entered World War II under the name of the Emperor. It was him that insisted on his theory of responsibility. However, the present Heisei Emperor was very popular.

The Heisei era

People in Japan may be looking back on their own trajectories for the past 30 years of Heisei.
